A 'Hole in the Wall' for Tanzania!
About my plan
Plan location
Tanzania
Description
'A Hole in the Wall' of schools and community buildings in Tanzania that supports a movement to revolutionise access to education for people in extreme poverty and beyond!
My Big reasons are
As a person with severe learning disabilities I struggled to learn in an education system that was not designed for people like me. I finished Grade 12 with a very low score despite obvious intelligence and I had dreams of further education. It was hard to hold onto those dreams in the face of constant failure and my “inability”. I now hold a Cert 3 & 4 in Community Services and Diploma in Welfare with 6 High Distinctions. I am current studying my Bachelor of Social Work at University where I sit on a GPA of 6.28 (Distinction) and average Distinctions and High Distinctions in my assessment. The only difference between now and school is the availability accessible tools and resources. The reason I share my story is to highlight the power of giving someone the tools that they need to learn. This power can open doors to a career, empower a person to achieve or inspire them to change the world. Professor Sugata Mitra has been researching the benefits of child-driven learning for many years and now we have a way of linking children in ANY situation to effective, world changing education! I believe that making the Hole in the Wall project available to the young people of Tanzania will afford them an effective tool to further their own education, or gain one where it previously wasn’t available to them. Furthermore if placed in community meeting spaces as well as schools this opportunity to educate, empower and connect would benefit the whole community. Gemma Sissia, the founder of the School of St Jude, runs her school by the philosophy of eradicating poverty through education and by taking the Hole in the Wall project to Tanzania we to can join in that movement. If you would like to know more I encourage you to visit the follow links: http://www.hole-in-the-wall.com/index.html - The Hole in the Wall Project http://www.schoolofstjude.org/ - The School of St Jude http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/en/sugata_mitra_the_child_driven_education.html - Professor Sugata Mitra's TED Talk.
My plan will be a success when
We have installed Hole in the Wall learning pods into the schools of the Moshi region and in the School of St Jude thereby introducing Tanzania to an additional and viable educational tool that will provide endless benefits and opportunities to the Tanzanian people.

Update from Alison Dower : I am learning the art of patience very acutely at the moment as there is a delay in announcing the successful applicants for funding - the funding which will allow me to set up and coordinate an amazing program in Brisbane for people with disabilities who want to expand their social horizons through doing many of the great activities Brisbane has to offer! Hopefully we will be notified in the next two weeks so that I can get the ball rolling! This is the opportunity that will expand my skill set in a massive and positive way in my Tanzanian project but also the reason I am applying the brakes for a while to this project! Thankyou so much for all of your continued support :) Peace Ally
